Since the majority of the time mopeds are fuel powered, they are then required by law to follow the same traffic laws as other motor vehicles. For instance, mopeds are required to follow all traffic signs, signals, flows of traffic, and yield to right of way at the appropriate time. Also, like all other road users, a moped rider will need to arrange insurance cover before taking his/her vehicle on the road.
Young people are normally the owners of mopeds, and as a result of their lack of experience on the road, they are said to be more likely to get into accidents. In order to reduce such mishaps, it is important that young people (as well as other first time moped owners) know the correct way to handle their vehicles and what safety precautions need to be taken while on the road.
Because mopeds are much noisier than other motorbikes due to their smaller engines, it is vital that moped mirrors are used constantly by the riders to check for vehicles approaching from behind.. Being unable to hear an approaching car or even the sound of horn over the sound of the moped engine can lead to unfortunate accidents if the riders do not use their mirrors appropriately. Also, when the moped rider wishes to manoeuvre into another lane or make a turn, mirrors should be used. Mopeds may be less visible to other road users because of their size, so riders must always take extra care.
Every driver of road vehicles and motorbike rider will have a blind spot which unfortunately cannot be found by using vehicle mirrors; however, by simply taking a quick glance over this/her shoulder. a moped rider can locate this blind spot easily. Blind spot checks should be done whenever changing lanes, making turns, and even starting off to ensure no other vehicles are in that blind spot.
Most accidents occur when moped riders make mistakes such as quickly pulling in and out of driveways or out from between parked cars. Also, it is worth noting that moped riders should not ride on the pavement instead of the road – this would obviously create a considerable hazard to pedestrians. Mopeds should not be used by one rider only and are not designed to carry passengers. Additionally, it is important that moped riders wear appropriate safety clothing for added protection. All of the mentioned safety precautions must be heeded before a moped is taken on the road for the first time.
